Prince Yriel is Autarch of Iyanden, High Admiral of its fleet, and Corsair prince of the Eldritch Raiders, a naval mind the craftworld exiled and then needed back. He never walked a Path of War long enough to please the shrines. The Path of the Mariner was enough. When Hive Fleet Kraken came to eat Iyanden, he returned from that exile and kept the world-ship from becoming a husk.
The Spear of Twilight is the price. It keeps him alive and kills him in instalments. Yvraine later tore the curse back, which is the kind of gift that still looks like a weapon. His flagship Flame of Asuryan has followed him through disgrace and rescue alike.
Iyanden honours him as defender and bastard of Ulthanash's house in the same breath. Reckless is the word his critics use. Alive is the word the dead of Kraken do not get to use.
