Prince Yriel
Autarch of Iyanden, High Admiral, Prince of the Eldritch Raiders
Also known as Yriel, High Admiral Yriel, Prince of the Eldritch Raiders
Homeworld: Iyanden
Prince Yriel is an Autarch of the craftworld of Iyanden, High Admiral of its fleet, and a Corsair prince known as one of the Eldritch Raiders. He is recorded as a bastard scion of the noble house of Ulthanash, a lineage that grants him standing among Iyanden’s aristocracy without shielding him from its disapproval. Unusually for one who holds the Autarch’s war-role, Yriel did not walk the Path of the Warrior for the span the shrines expect of a war leader; his temperament instead settled on the Path of the Mariner, a wanderer’s discipline that shaped him more as a fleet commander and raider than as a cloistered swordsman.
That restlessness drove him beyond Iyanden’s webway gates long before Hive Fleet Kraken ever threatened it. Judged reckless by the craftworld’s seers and nobility, Yriel was exiled and turned Corsair, gathering a fleet of like-minded exiles and adventurers under the banner of the Eldritch Raiders. As their prince, he raided and voyaged across the width of the galaxy, a life that hardened him as a void commander even as it deepened Iyanden’s mistrust of him.
Iyanden’s need overrode its judgement when Hive Fleet Kraken descended on the craftworld, a campaign recorded as having already bled Iyanden of much of its population before Yriel’s return. Recalled from exile, he took up the Spear of Twilight, an ancient and corrupted artefact, and used it to turn the tide of the invasion, preventing Iyanden from being reduced to an empty husk. The weapon’s price was cruel by design: it sustained his life in battle while killing him by slow degrees, a bargain he accepted to save a craftworld that had cast him out. Iyanna Arienal’s rebuilding of Iyanden’s Wraith Host in this same period gave the craftworld the strength to survive Kraken’s aftermath, work that stands alongside Yriel’s own defence of it.
Yriel’s flagship, the Flame of Asuryan, carried him through both disgrace and rescue, and remains his command vessel as High Admiral. His curse endured for years afterward, a visible cost that critics cited as proof of his recklessness, until Yvraine, the Emissary of Ynnead, lifted it during the wider galactic upheavals that drew the Ynnari into being. That encounter placed Yriel, however briefly, among the figures orbiting Ynnead’s revival, without displacing his primary loyalty to Iyanden. He remains active in its service, honoured as the defender who prevented the craftworld’s extinction, yet still regarded by many of its own as a bastard prince whose glory came at reckless cost.
