Iyanden

Iyanden is an Aeldari craftworld of the Eastern Fringe, once among the most populous of its kind before Hive Fleet Kraken devastated it in 992.M41. A craftworld is a world-ship built to carry a fragment of the Aeldari people and their culture through the void after the Fall, and Iyanden’s vast population and fleet once made it a byword among its kind for size and martial reach.

For millennia before the Kraken assault, Iyanden stood alongside craftworld Biel-Tan as a bulwark against Chaos incursions spilling from the eastern rim, its warhosts answering raids that other, more sheltered craftworlds were spared. Its Autarch, Prince Yriel, is recorded as having led Iyanden’s forces into a disastrous campaign against the Ork WAAAGH! of Warlord Snagrod, a defeat for which he was cast into exile. Yriel took many of Iyanden’s finest warriors with him into a wandering corsair life beyond the craftworld’s webway gates, leaving Iyanden weaker in both leaders and living defenders when Hive Fleet Kraken later found it.

When Kraken reached Iyanden in 992.M41, it consumed so much of the population that the craftworld’s survival came to depend on its dead: the spirit stones of the fallen were bound in unprecedented numbers into Wraithguard and Wraithlords, and the few living Aeldari who remained fought on alongside these ghost warriors of their own ancestors. Iyanden teetered on the edge of extinction until Yriel returned from exile bearing the Spear of Twilight, a webway relic won during his wanderings, and rallied the craftworld’s remaining strength alongside the Spiritseer Iyanna Arienal, keeper of its Infinity Circuit, to turn back the threats gathering over the weakened world-ship.

Iyanden’s present standing rests on that survival as much as on its former size: a craftworld that lost most of its living population yet endures through its dead, still contending with Chaos raiders along the eastern rim and still led, in accounts of the era, by Yriel as Autarch. Among the Aeldari craftworlds it is now distinguished less by numbers than by the sheer proportion of its warhost drawn from the Infinity Circuit, a Wraith-heavy character born directly of the Kraken catastrophe. Its story binds a named place, the Eastern Fringe, to a dated calamity and its aftermath, and connects it to Biel-Tan as fellow guardian of the rim and to the Tyranid hive fleets as the instrument of its near-ruin.
