Ryarus

Ryarus served as Apothecary of the Silver Skulls’ 4th Company, the quiet reductor who tattooed every recovered gene-seed name into his own skin. Like every Apothecary of the Adeptus Astartes, his duty combined battlefield medicine with the grimmer obligation of the reductor: extracting and preserving the gene-seed of the fallen so that a brother’s genetic legacy, and some part of his memory, survived him. For Ryarus this duty became a private rite of record-keeping, each name inked into his own flesh as the Chapter’s tally of the dead and recovered grew.

He walked the Gildar Rift war beside Techmarine Correlan, speaking only when the squad needed the next hard order, a narrow economy of words that marked him among the 4th Company’s rank and file. Boarding actions against Corsair-held hulls and the later surface purge of the Gildar system both ran through his narthecium, his presence steadying the line wherever the fighting was worst and the wounded needed him most.

Orks killed him in a last stand before the Gildar Rift was read clean of the enemy, ending his service in the same unglamorous, duty-bound manner in which he had conducted it. The tattoos were lost with him, but the gene-seed names he had already recovered and secured were not: the Chapter kept what he had saved, a quiet continuity of the Silver Skulls’ fighting strength purchased by his death.
