Assault on Formal Prime
The Assault on Formal Prime was the Imperial Guard offensive of 755.M41 in which Warmaster Slaydo captured the world during Operation Redrake. Formal Prime’s garrison, Shebol Red-Hand’s Charismites, resisted the Guard for eleven weeks, far outlasting the campaign originally allotted to the assault. Slaydo had budgeted six weeks for the operation, but the hive labyrinths honeycombing Formal Prime’s surface gave the Charismites a defensive advantage that the attacking Guard regiments could not quickly overcome. Fighting through the tunnels and habs drove casualties toward two hundred dead for every metre gained, a toll that marked Formal Prime as one of the costlier actions of the crusade to that point. The defence did not collapse until the White Scars committed to the assault, breaking through where Guard infantry alone had stalled. Shebol Red-Hand himself escaped capture and the crucifixes prepared for the defeated defenders, vanishing from the immediate record of the campaign. With Formal Prime taken, Slaydo’s crusade gained its first firm foothold on the road toward Balhaut, the world that would become the crusade’s next great objective. The assault stands in crusade chronology as an early demonstration of the cost the Sabbat Worlds could exact even from a numerically superior Imperial force, and of the role Adeptus Astartes support played in breaking prepared defences that Guard formations alone could not overcome.
