The Assault on Nero Hive was an Imperial Guard and Raven Guard attack on the Chaos-held Nero Hive on Caligula during the Sabbat Worlds Crusade. It is recorded as one of the defining engagements of the period of the Crusade later remembered as the Ghostmaker years, when Warmaster-directed forces fought to prise the hive-cities of Caligula from a Chaos-aligned occupation. The action drew together elements of the Tanith First-and-Only under Colonel Colm Corbec, alongside Raven Guard Space Marines committed to the same theatre, reflecting the mixed Guard-and-Astartes composition typical of the Crusade’s harder objectives. The assault opened badly: a psychic storm broke over the hive as the attack force descended, wrecking troop-ships in the air and stranding the first wave before it could organise inside Nero Hive’s defences. Cut off from the wider plan, Corbec’s Tanith detachment pressed into the hive’s western blocks on its own initiative and traced the storm to a daemonic presence rooted there, identifying the creature as the true source of the disturbance rather than a mere side effect of the fighting. Corbec called in orbital fire directed by Navarre, and the resulting bombardment destroyed both the daemon and the district that had sheltered it, breaking the psychic storm and allowing the wider assault to resume. Gaunt also used a bait column led by Trooper Bragg to draw remaining bandit and hold-out forces into the open, where a Marauder bombing strike destroyed them, mopping up resistance left in the hive’s shadow after the main battle had ended.
