Brin Milo

Brin Milo was the Tanith boy Gaunt pulled off a dying world, a piper and adjutant who grew up in a regiment that should not have had children in it. He played the pipes, carried messages, and survived long enough to become the Ghosts' luck given a name.

After Herodor he stepped off the line to walk with older powers than a colonel-commissar. The later books keep finding him at the edge of things, pipes and all, as if Tanith left one voice on purpose.

He is not a mascot. He is what the First-and-Only looks like when it lives, and the regiment still listens for the tune before a night move. Gaunt still does.
