Battle of Calth

The Battle of Calth was the Word Bearers’ ambush of the Ultramarines at Calth, opening the Horus Heresy’s Shadow Crusade in 007.M31. The Word Bearers, under First Captain Kor Phaeron and First Chaplain Erebus, drew the Ultramarines to the shipyard world under cover of a joint muster in the Veridian System, ostensibly gathered against an anticipated ork incursion, before turning without warning on the allies they had sailed beside. The Word Bearers’ enmity toward the Ultramarines dated to the Emperor’s censure of Lorgar Aurelian decades earlier, when Roboute Guilliman and the Ultramarines had razed the Word Bearers’ city of Monarchia on his order and the whole Legion had been made to kneel in its ashes. Warmaster Horus, having already destroyed loyalist forces at Isstvan III and Isstvan V, judged the Ultramarines, the largest of the Space Marine Legions, the last serious obstacle to his rebellion, and sanctioned Lorgar’s campaign against Ultramar. Lorgar himself held back from the opening strike, occupied with rites bound to his Legion’s wider design against Guilliman’s realm, leaving Kor Phaeron and Erebus to direct the assault in his name. As the two Legions’ fleets gathered above Calth, Word Bearers warships turned their guns on the assembled Ultramarines without warning, while a warp-linked disturbance tied to the birth of the Ruinstorm struck Calth’s defenders and civilian population at the moment of ambush, cutting the system off from much of the wider Imperium. Guilliman, aboard his disabled flagship Macragge’s Honour in orbit when the attack began, ordered his forces to return fire once Lorgar refused to answer his demand for a ceasefire, and thereafter organised the counter-offensive. On the surface, officers including Captain Remus Ventanus, First Master Marius Gage, and Sergeant Aeonid Thiel led the ground resistance alongside Adeptus Mechanicus Skitarii cohorts, with Thiel’s defiance of standing orders in pursuit of withdrawing Word Bearers forces later drawing Guilliman’s censure even as it helped blunt the attack. Among the Word Bearers commanders killed in the fighting was Dark Apostle Kurtha Sedd, though many of the traitors, unable to withdraw from the system, were driven into Calth’s cave networks, where fighting against them is recorded as continuing for years afterward, into 014.M31, in what later accounts call the Underworld War. Calth’s ambush opened the wider Shadow Crusade, the Word Bearers’ campaign against Ultramar, fought alongside Angron’s World Eaters, who struck neighbouring theatres of Guilliman’s realm in the same offensive. The Ruinstorm’s isolation of Ultramar in Calth’s wake left Guilliman unable to march on Terra with the other loyalists, forcing him instead to fall back on the Five Hundred Worlds and, later, to found Imperium Secundus. Calth is recorded as one of the principal loyalist reverses of the Horus Heresy, ranked alongside the massacres at Isstvan in the scale of its losses and its effect on the wider war. The light of Veridia, the star that Calth orbits, has remained lethal to exposed life on Calth’s surface since the battle, a consequence attributed to the fires and debris of the void war fouling the world’s skies. The population has since lived in cavern cities beneath the surface, while shipbuilding continues in Calth’s orbit much as before the attack. This lasting transformation of the world’s population and industry distinguishes Calth from other Heresy-era battlefields, binding it in Ultramar’s history to Guilliman’s wartime leadership and the Word Bearers’ betrayal alike.
