The Battle of Macragge

The Battle of Macragge was the concluding engagement of the First Tyrannic War, fought in 745.M41 at Macragge, capital of Ultramar. Ultramar is the realm centred on the Five Hundred Worlds that the Primarch (one of the Emperor’s gene-forged sons) Roboute Guilliman established after the Horus Heresy, and the Macragge System is its home well, a gravity pocket grouping the mountain-world Macragge with its moons and neighbouring bodies Formaska, Laphis, Ardium, Thulium and Nova Thulium. As the vanguard of Hive Fleet Behemoth, an extragalactic tyranid invasion fleet, advanced through the Ultima Segmentum, it drove towards Macragge’s Fortress of Hera, seat of the Ultramarines Chapter, in an incursion later reckoned the opening battle of the Tyrannic Wars. Forewarned of the Tyranids’ approach by Inquisitor Kryptman, Chapter Master Marneus Calgar resolved that Behemoth would be halted at Macragge before it could drive deeper into Ultramar or the wider Imperium. He marshalled the Ultramarines’ battle fleet, augmented by Imperial Navy squadrons and Ultramar’s planetary defence auxilia, in the system’s orbital approaches, while ground defences were prepared around the Fortress of Hera and the northern and southern polar fortresses. Supporting Calgar in the defence were Chief Librarian Varro Tigurius and Captain Saul Invictus of the 1st Company, who took command of the northern polar fortress. When Behemoth’s outriders reached the system, void escorts and orbital stations destroyed vast numbers of bio-ships, yet enough Mycetic Spores broke through to seed the surface with tyranid broods. Calgar split his ground forces into three task forces, committing most of the 1st Company and the Auxilia to the polar fortresses while leading a rearguard of the 2nd Company and elements of the 5th and 10th in a fighting withdrawal. That withdrawal culminated at Cold Steel Ridge, where the Swarmlord, the Hive Mind’s synapse creature, singled out Calgar and left him gravely wounded before Ultramarines gunships extracted him to the Battle Barge Octavius. In orbit, Calgar’s fleet pursued the retreating Tyranid vessels to the ringed world of Circe, where an ambush reinforced by warships from the warp destroyed most of Behemoth’s fleet; the battleship Dominus Astra is recorded as having driven into the tyranid fleet’s core and detonated its warp drives to annihilate the survivors. On the surface, Invictus’s northern garrison and the southern fortress held at ruinous cost until the 3rd and 7th Companies, sent once the void battle was won, fought through to relieve them; Saul Invictus was among those killed. A separate relief action by squadrons of the Imperial Navy’s Battlefleet Bakka, converging on the system once Behemoth’s vanguard had been broken, is recorded as a distinct engagement rather than part of the battle proper. The destruction of Behemoth’s vanguard preserved Macragge and the coherence of the Five Hundred Worlds, which the Shadow Crusade’s devastation of Calth had shown could otherwise stand separately vulnerable. The Ultramarines raised Tyrannic War Veteran formations afterwards to preserve the lessons of fighting a tyranid foe, and Calgar’s later title, Lord of Macragge, denoting authority over the entire system rather than Macragge alone, followed from his conduct in the defence. The battle’s significance outlasted the First Tyrannic War itself: subsequent campaigns by the Black Legion and the Death Guard have each treated Macragge as a principal objective, reasoning that the fall of the system would unmake Ultramar, and the engagement is remembered as the opening chapter of the wider Tyrannic Wars against the tyranid species. Chaplain Ortan Cassius fought beside Calgar in the defence and, in its final stages, accompanied the relief force that fought its way to the polar fortresses, arriving too late to save the veterans of the 1st Company. Few of his unit survived the close-quarters fighting that followed, and Cassius was struck down by a rampaging Carnifex; he clung to life until the Apothecaries could rebuild his body with extensive bionics. After the invasion he withdrew the Banner of Macragge from the field until the Chapter had restored its strength, and he obtained Calgar’s sanction to raise the Tyrannic War Veterans from warriors who had fought in the battle.

  • Marneus Calgar (Commanded the defence against Hive Fleet Behemoth. Accounts place him at Cold Steel Ridge, where the Swarmlord wounded him, and also with the fleet; one account keeps him in space for the whole battle. After evacuation to the battle barge Octavius he pursued the hive fleet to Circe. The battle is dated to 745.M41 and to 746.M41, and one account places it several decades after Tyran’s destruction in 745.M41. A list of his deeds also says he led the boarding of the hive ship Behemoth Primus.)
  • Ortan Cassius (In 745.M41 Cassius fought beside Calgar against Hive Fleet Behemoth, accompanied the relief force to the polar fortresses, and was gravely wounded by a Carnifex.)
  • Varro Tigurius (Supported Calgar in the defence against Hive Fleet Behemoth; Calgar later said that without Tigurius’s counsel Behemoth would have overwhelmed the Ultramarines.)
