Invasion of Ultramar
The Invasion of Ultramar was the assault of Hive Fleet Behemoth on the Ultramarines’ Realm of Ultramar, centred on Macragge, in 745.M41. It is the best-known attack on the Ultramarines’ home domain in the forty-first millennium and the first occasion on which the Tyranids are recorded as striking at the heart of a Space Marine Chapter’s territory. Ultramar is a cluster of Imperial worlds in the eastern reaches of the Imperium, ruled from Macragge, the homeworld of the Primarch Roboute Guilliman. The defence of these worlds therefore concerned not only the Chapter but the administrative structure that Guilliman had established there. Behemoth was one of the first Tyranid hive fleets to be identified by the Imperium, and it advanced on Ultramar from the eastern fringe of the galaxy. Its forces overran outlying systems before turning on the core worlds of the realm. Accounts describe a campaign fought across several planets rather than a single battle, with the decisive engagements taking place on and above Macragge. The Ultramarines were led by Chapter Master Marneus Calgar, supported by the Chapter’s Librarium under Chief Librarian Varro Tigurius, whose psychic warnings and reading of the swarm’s movements shaped the Chapter’s dispositions. Imperial Navy squadrons and Imperial Guard and planetary defence forces fought alongside them, and the Chapter’s fortress-monastery, the Fortress of Hera, served as the focus of resistance. The precise order of the Tyranid landings and the exact losses on individual worlds vary between accounts and should be treated with caution. The invasion was repulsed and the main body of Hive Fleet Behemoth was broken, at heavy cost to the Ultramarines and to the populations of the affected worlds. The Chapter’s losses were severe, and Calgar himself is recorded as having been gravely wounded and restored by extensive augmetic reconstruction. Fragments of the fleet survived and continued to threaten the eastern Imperium, which is why the campaign is regarded as a defeat of Behemoth rather than an end to the Tyranid threat. Its consequences shaped the Chapter’s later doctrine and the Imperium’s understanding of the Tyranids, and it is often treated as the reference point for how a prepared Space Marine Chapter can meet a hive fleet. The event should be distinguished from earlier attacks on Ultramar. During the Horus Heresy, the Word Bearers struck at the Ultramarines’ domain in the events surrounding the Battle of Calth in the early years of the Heresy (M31), which belongs to a different era and a different enemy. Some later traditions link Chaos forces to Ultramar in the forty-first millennium as well, but accounts differ on the participants and dating, and no attribution is advanced beyond what is securely recorded in the surviving accounts. The invasion is customarily anchored to Macragge and the wider Ultramar region. The contemporary narrative remains incomplete on several points of detail. On the timeline, its contemporaries include the Ultramarines’ continuing campaigns under Calgar and the other Tyranid hive fleets identified in the same millennium.
