Sabbat Worlds Crusade

The Sabbat Worlds Crusade was an Imperial campaign begun in 755.M41 to reclaim the Sabbat Worlds sector from the forces of Chaos. The sector had first been brought into the Imperium millennia earlier by the warrior-saint Sabbat, whose Imperial Crusade of conquest gave the region its name, and whose cult, centred on the shrine world of Hagia, lent the later war a religious as well as a military character. In the centuries after 600.M41 the sector fell piecemeal to an Archon-led coalition of Chaos warlords, and by the early 740s.M41 it could no longer be considered under Imperial governance; its reconquest was entrusted to Lord Militant Slaydo, a lifelong admirer of Sabbat who had petitioned the High Lords of Terra for the charter on the strength of his victory in the Khulan campaign, and who was raised to Warmaster to lead the vast Astra Militarum host assembled for the task. Slaydo opened the crusade’s decisive early phase at the fortress world of Balhaut, breaking the Archenemy’s hold on the system guarding the sector’s approach after a protracted siege. Balhaut is remembered on Orrery’s graph as the founding battle of the Tanith First-and-Only, a regiment raised from the world of Tanith following its destruction on the eve of the crusade’s launch and led through the field by Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt, whose service through the crusade’s following decades ties the regiment’s record to many of its named engagements. Slaydo died shortly after the victory at Balhaut; command of the crusade passed to Lord Militant, later Warmaster, Macaroth, under whom the main Imperial thrust continued east through the sector for years afterward. Under Macaroth the crusade opened onto multiple fronts as Imperial forces pressed toward worlds including Hagia, Phantine, Aexe Cardinal, Verghast, Ancreon Sextus and Jago, and carried the advance through the Khan Group of systems, among them the world of Khan IV, toward the Cabal Systems beyond. Resistance was led in succession by the Archon Nadzybar and, after his death, by Archon Urlock Gaur, whose own warrior-cult, the Blood Pact, is rumoured to have originated within the sector itself; among Gaur’s subordinate warlords, the Magister Anakwanar Sek later broke away as the self-styled Anarch, leading a faction known as the Sons of Sek. At Vervunhive on Verghast, Gaunt’s regiment fought one of the crusade’s notable sieges, helping to lift the city’s blockade and liberate the world for the Imperium. On occupied worlds such as Gereon, Imperial agents and partisans continued resistance behind Archenemy lines rather than in open battle, while the crusade’s main armies fought attritional engagements that accounts describe as exacting losses comparable to the Imperium’s hardest-fought campaigns of the era. The crusade’s long duration and the absence of a single decisive victory over the Anarch’s forces have made it emblematic of the grinding character of the Imperium’s wars in the late 41st millennium, prosecuted as much through faith in the Beati Sabbat’s intercession as through Guard and void strength. Its course is bound to a sequence of named crises on Orrery’s timeline: the death of Warmaster Slaydo, the rise of Warmaster Macaroth in his place, the burning of Tanith that raised Gaunt’s regiment, and the linked liberation of Verghast and siege of Vervunhive that followed years afterward. Its contemporaries include Macaroth and his crusade staff, the Ecclesiarchy’s custodians of Sabbat’s cult on Hagia, and the successive Archenemy commanders ranged against them; the sector’s final fate is recorded as unresolved even as the campaign stands among the Imperium’s most sustained reconquests.
