Farsight Enclaves
Also known as the Farsight Enclaves, Enclaves
The Farsight Enclaves are an independent T’au sept polity, a breakaway remnant of the T’au Empire that rejects Ethereal rule. Known within the Empire as the Forbidden Zone, the Enclaves lie on the far side of the Damocles Gulf on the Eastern Fringe of the galaxy, screened from Imperial and T’au contact alike by fortified void defences. Their allegiance is xenos but not imperial to the wider T’au cause: the Enclaves still hold to the ideal of the Greater Good, yet they bar all Ethereals from their worlds and answer to no High Council.
The polity draws its population from every T’au caste save the Ethereals, alongside Kroot, human Gue’vesa, and other allied species long integrated into T’au military culture. Where the Empire concentrates authority in its Ethereal caste, each Enclave world instead governs itself through a locally elected council, a divergence its founder is recorded as justifying with the principle that constituent worlds should “stand by themselves, not merely follow, blindly obedient.” Overall command rests with the Fire Caste, exercised collectively through a body of senior commanders known as the Eight rather than through a single absolute ruler.
The Enclaves originated in the aftermath of the Damocles Crusade of 742.M41, when the Imperium’s attempt to seize T’au territory was repelled. In the crusade’s wake, the Fire Caste commander Shas’o Vior’la Shovah Kais Mont’yr, known to the Imperium as Commander Farsight, led an expeditionary force to reclaim worlds lost to the Imperium, pursuing Ork raiders under Warboss Grog Ironteef as far as Arthas Moloch. What he encountered there during the Farsight Expedition to Arthas Moloch is recorded as having left him profoundly shaken, and he subsequently defied orders to return to T’au space, instead consolidating his captured territory into a chain of fortified colonies beyond the Damocles Gulf. In 997.M41 a Tyranid incursion, described in different accounts as a splinter of Hive Fleet Kraken or of Hive Fleet Gorgon, struck the Enclaves; by then commanded in the field by Commander Arra’kon, the Enclaves’ defence drew Farsight himself out of a long self-imposed exile to lead a counter-attack of some eighty XV8 Battlesuit teams. The Enclaves later fought alongside Empire forces during the Second Agrellan Campaign, and in more recent times withstood an Ork Waaagh! led by Warboss Nazdreg before their forces were drawn into the wider Arks of Omen campaign.
Despite its schism with the Ethereal High Council, the Enclaves’ military remains built in the Empire’s image, fielding Fire Caste warriors and Air Caste naval elements alongside Kroot and Gue’vesa auxiliaries, supported by Earth Caste manufacturing established within Enclave territory. Cultural divergence extends to Farsight’s doctrine that martyrdom in service of the Greater Good is the highest honour, commemorated on one Enclave world where fields of memorial stones mark the fallen. Leadership today remains collective under the Eight, with Commander Farsight recorded as still living and revered, if never formally rehabilitated, within the sept worlds of the T’au Empire he left behind.
