Herodor
Herodor is a shrine world of the Sabbat Worlds, holding little strategic worth of its own but standing at the centre of two events that shaped the wider. It belongs to the Khan Group, a minor cluster of the Sabbat Worlds under Imperial allegiance, and its fame rests on sanctity rather than resources, population, or industry. In M35, Saint Sabbat is recorded as having rested on Herodor and washed her wounds in the waters at Civitas; the act consecrated those waters, and the site grew into the shrine city and pilgrim destination that later ages knew it as.
Herodor’s second and more consequential moment came in M41, during the later phase of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade prosecuted under Warmaster Macaroth. A cult calling itself the Anointed identified a girl on Herodor as the living reincarnation of Saint Sabbat, drawing both pilgrims and enemies to the world. Enok Innokenti, acting against her, travelled to Herodor to kill the girl and end the cult’s claim. The Imperial Guard regiment known as the Tanith First-and-Only, under Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt, was committed to the world’s defence as Chaos forces associated with the Archon Anakwanar Sek pressed the siege, seeking to extinguish the shrine before it could be turned into a rallying symbol for the Crusade. In the fighting at the Old Hive, the Saint is recorded as having manifested and slain Innokenti, an event that broke the immediate threat and altered the course of the surrounding campaign.
Herodor’s standing therefore rests on the conjunction of these two events at a single site rather than on any wider importance: the M35 sanctification of the Civitas waters and the M41 battle at the Old Hive are remembered together, binding the world’s religious character to its role in the Crusade. Its contemporaries are drawn from that later Crusade era — Gaunt and the Tanith First-and-Only as defenders, Sek’s forces as besiegers, and the Anointed and Innokenti as the cult and its adversary contesting the Saint’s reincarnation — placing Herodor firmly within the Sabbat Worlds Crusade’s timeline rather than as an isolated curiosity.
In the current era, Herodor is known chiefly as a shrine world of the cult of Saint Sabbat, its Civitas waters and Old Hive preserved as sites of pilgrimage and remembrance. Its significance is inseparable from the Saint herself and from the Sabbat Worlds Crusade of which its M41 battle formed a turning point, and it is understood within Imperial memory less as a world in its own right than as a place where the Saint’s legend and the Crusade’s fortunes met.
