Dorden

Chief Medical Officer

Also known as Doc Dorden

Homeworld: Tanith

Dorden was chief medical officer of the Tanith First and Only, the Astra Militarum regiment known as Gaunt’s Ghosts, through most of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade. A civilian physician before the Founding, he enlisted after Tanith itself was destroyed on the day the regiment was raised, choosing to keep serving the survivors of his world rather than practise medicine anywhere else. He carried a doctor’s temperament into uniform: he went unarmed by preference, disliked waste of any kind, and ran the regimental aid post as though it were a practice that never closed, whatever world the Ghosts were fighting on.

His service spanned the Ghosts’ long path through the Sabbat Worlds Crusade, from the early campaigns fought under Warmaster Slaydo and, after Slaydo’s death, under Macaroth, across a sequence of worlds contested with the Blood Pact and other forces loyal to the Archenemy. Dorden was among the small company left behind on Gereon during its years-long occupation, tending the wounded of a covert resistance effort alongside Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt, Major Rawne, and chief scout Mkoll; he later served through the crisis at Herodor, a shrine world bound to the memory of Saint Sabbat, where later tradition holds that the Beati herself was made manifest. Each posting drew further on a body already worn by decades of field surgery, and by the campaign’s later years his health was failing even as the regiment’s need for him had not.

Dorden trained Surgeon Ana Curth as his deputy, and it was she who inherited the regiment’s medical service after him; within the Ghosts he was also known as a steady counterweight to Gaunt’s command and a quiet friend to officers such as Colonel Corbec. The war cost him personally: his son, Trooper Mikal Dorden, was killed while serving in the ranks he tended, a loss he carried without ever stepping back from his post. He is recorded as having treated friend and rival alike without distinction, a practice consistent with his refusal to see the regiment as anything other than a single body of patients in his care.

Dorden’s service ended at Salvation’s Reach, where cancer finally overcame him at a point in the campaign when the Ghosts still had every need of a doctor; Ana Curth succeeded him as chief medic in the field. Within the regiment his name outlived him: soldiers are said to invoke him in the present tense over a wounded comrade, a habit of speech that functions as his memorial and ties his identity permanently to the Tanith First and Only rather than to any single battlefield. Among the Ghosts’ officers and rank and file alike, Dorden is remembered less for any single engagement than for the continuity of care he gave across the whole of the regiment’s passage through the Sabbat Worlds Crusade.
