Darnath Lysander
First Captain of the Imperial Fists, Bearer of the Fist of Dorn, Watch Commander of the Phalanx, Overseer of the Armoury
Also known as Captain Lysander, First Captain Lysander, The Emperor’s Wrath
Homeworld: Terra
Darnath Lysander is First Captain of the Imperial Fists, bearer of the Fist of Dorn — a thunder hammer inherited from Captain Kleitus — and Watch Commander of the Phalanx. Lexicanum records Holy Terra as his homeworld: he was recruited after a thirteen-year pilgrimage that killed his parents, when Chaplain Shadryss found him near the Pillar of Bone, remnant of the Chapter’s old fortress-monastery on Terra. He is not of Inwit by attested origin. He rose from Scout and sergeant to captain of the 2nd Company, then to First Captain after the Siege of Haddrake Tor, and he remains active in the Era Indomitus.
His earliest dated Liber Honorus entry is the Battle of Colonial Bridge on Iduno in 567.M40. In 585.M40 he boarded and captured the Eldar cruiser Blood of Khaine and took command of the 2nd Company. At Haddrake Tor he led the peak assault, received the Fist of Dorn from the dying Kleitus amid warp-disrupted teleports, and finished the three-year siege. As First Captain he pioneered mass Terminator teleport assaults, including the cleansing of an Alpha Legion asteroid base in the Jorgurd Cluster.
Aboard the Shield of Valour he vanished into a warp storm and was taken to the Iron Warriors fortress world Malodrax. He escaped in 964.M41 without weapons or armour; a millennium had passed in realspace. After six months of purity screening he was reinstated, and in 966.M41 he led the Purging of Malodrax. Accounts name his captor as Warsmith Shon’tu or, in the novel Malodrax, Warsmith Kraegon Thul. He later commanded Task Force Gauntlet on Vernalis in the Segmentum Obscurus against Emperor’s Children, the Roaring Blades, and daemons under Sybaris.
In 969.M41 the Invasion of Taladorn against Shon’tu’s Sons of the Forge nearly destroyed the 3rd Company after Lysander refused Ultramarines and Blood Angels aid. Chapter Master Vladimir Pugh stripped him of the 1st Company and assigned him to rebuild the 3rd for the Crusade of Thunder against Orks of the Magor Rift — actions on Kalin II and at a Viashan star fort under Chaplain Markov and Tor Garadon. In 970.M41, during the Infestation on Drashin, Pugh was slain by Tyranids in a space hulk; Lysander recovered the body with Vorn Hagen, destroyed the Norn Queen, and refused the Chapter Mastership so that Hagen succeeded. In 971.M41 the Fall of Malodrax ended the crusade: Lysander fought Shon’tu aboard the Tamunash, and the Phalanx enacted Exterminatus.
In 997.M41 he directed the Defence of Miral II against Hive Fleet Leviathan with Garadon’s Third. In 998.M41 he won the Battle for the Endeavour of Will against Shon’tu, though the Warsmith escaped. After the Great Rift he has fought across the Segmentum Solar and Segmentum Obscurus: he slew Droknog Redfist and turned the naval battle over Amurav, liberated manufactorums on the forge world Mons Magnifica from Necrons, suppressed Chaos uprisings on Hazzephet near the former Cadian Gate, and — diverted from Belis Corona — led Imperial Fists and Black Templars with Castellan Zweiland to hold Toros Tertium against Iron Warriors under Warsmith Kravek Morne. He still seeks a final reckoning with Shon’tu.
The Phalanx keeps his place between campaigns. Earlier overlays wrongly set Inwit as his homeworld and placed Pedro Kantor as his Chapter Master; Lexicanum attests Terra as origin and Pugh then Hagen as Chapter Masters in his principal M41 narrative. He does not discuss the Malodrax years, and the Chapter does not press him to.
