Raven Guard

The Raven Guard are a First Founding Space Marine Chapter descended from the XIX Legion and Primarch Corvus Corax, sworn to the Imperium of Man. Formed during the Unification Wars and Great Crusade of the thirtieth millennium, the Legion served for decades as one of the Emperor’s instruments of rapid, covert conquest before its reunion with Corax, who reshaped it around the disciplines of stealth, infiltration and precision strike that define the Chapter to this day.

The Chapter’s homeworld is Deliverance, an airless moon orbiting Kiavahr that Corax himself liberated from the world’s ruling tech-guilds before the Emperor discovered him there. Known in earlier records as Lycaeus, Deliverance remains home to the fortress-monastery of Ravenspire and to the harsh training regimes that produce the Chapter’s warriors. Raven Guard doctrine, drawn from Corax’s own experience of insurgency and guerrilla resistance, favours reconnaissance, sabotage and overwhelming strikes against an enemy’s weakest point over prolonged, attritional warfare. Its warriors wear armour of black trimmed in white, with company identity marked on the right shoulder plate.

During the Great Crusade the Legion campaigned widely, including the compliance of Isstvan III, but its relationship with Warmaster Horus grew strained after the Battle of Gate Forty-Two, where a costly frontal assault ordered against Corax’s own counsel reduced the Legion to some eighty thousand Astartes. That mistrust proved prescient: at the Drop Site Massacre of Isstvan V, the Raven Guard were among the loyalist forces betrayed by the Traitor Legions and all but destroyed, alongside the Salamanders and Iron Hands. The remnants withdrew to Deliverance, where Corax, drawing on proscribed texts on Astartes creation, forced an accelerated reconstitution of his gene-seed stocks to rebuild the Chapter’s ranks, a desperate measure whose costs — including unstable, unviable creations — are seldom discussed within the Chapter.

In the millennia since, the Raven Guard have continued to wage war from the shadows, and numerous Successor Chapters trace their gene-seed to Corax’s line. Kayvaan Shrike, once commander of the Chapter’s 3rd Company and noted for his mastery of the lightning claw, rose to become Chapter Master and was known among the Raven Guard as the Master of Shadows, a title later held by Aethon Shaan. The Chapter continues to mourn the loss of its primarch and upholds the doctrines of speed, secrecy and precision he impressed upon it.
