Branne Nev
Captain of the Raptors, Commander of Deliverance
Also known as Captain Branne
Homeworld: Deliverance
Branne Nev was a Raven Guard captain who held Deliverance, the Legion’s fortress-moon, during the Isstvan V Dropsite Massacre. He is recorded as the brother of fellow captain Agapito Nev, and as one of the officers whom the primarch Corvus Corax trusted to keep the Legion’s adopted homeworld secure while the greater part of the Raven Guard deployed to Isstvan V. That deployment rested on Horus’s false promise of unity, and it ended with the Legion all but destroyed on the Isstvan plain. As a result, Branne became in effect the ranking authority left to the Raven Guard beyond the battlefield.
His command in this period was custodial rather than martial. Deliverance retained little beyond its training cadres and reserves, and no reliable word came from Isstvan V. Branne is recorded as administering the fortress-moon, maintaining its recruitment pipelines and keeping its infrastructure intact against the day Corax might return. He had no means of knowing the scale of the betrayal, nor the diminished state in which his primarch would eventually come back. In the Orrery’s map and timeline graph, his service binds Deliverance to the Isstvan V sequence early in the Horus Heresy, when the Raven Guard’s survival depended on the world he held.
Corax’s return found a Legion reduced to a remnant, and Branne is recorded as having both an intact fortress and a proposal for its use. That proposal became the Raptors, an accelerated induction and implantation programme intended to replace the Legion’s losses far faster than gene-seed, the genetic material from which a Space Marine is made, could reliably sustain. Branne took direct charge of it, and from this he drew the title Captain of the Raptors alongside his standing as commander of Deliverance. Some of the warriors it produced are recorded as unstable or flawed, a consequence of compressing processes that normally unfolded over years into a fraction of that time. Branne continued regardless. His reasoning was that Deliverance held no reserve Legion in waiting, and that Corax could not afford a slower, safer method while Horus’s rebellion spread across the Imperium.
The Raptors are remembered within the Raven Guard as both a necessity and a wrong, and Branne is recorded as accepting that judgement without disowning the programme he built. Deliverance endured the strain of rapid rearmament and remained in Raven Guard hands into the era that followed. His contemporaries in the story are Corax, who directed the Legion’s recovery, and Agapito Nev, his brother, and the loyalist survivors of Isstvan V who shared the Raven Guard’s predicament. Branne Nev’s own fate beyond this period is not recorded. His standing among the Legion’s named captains rests chiefly on his stewardship of Deliverance and his founding of the Raptors, a legacy the Raven Guard have generally kept from wider discussion.
