The Nightbringer
Also known as Kaelis Ra
Homeworld: Pavonis
The Nightbringer is Aza’gorod, a C’tan, one of the star gods that once ruled before the Necrons’ revolt, now known chiefly through a surviving shard. The C’tan were an ancient species that fed on stars and bound lesser life to their will long before the rise of the Necrontyr empire. The Nightbringer is not a Necron overlord or dynasty ruler; it is one of the beings the Necrons eventually enslaved, encountered today only as a fragment of that larger entity.
Among the Necrontyr’s makers-turned-masters, Aza’gorod ranked among the oldest and most feared of the C’tan, worshipped by the Necrontyr as a bringer of death before the War in Heaven ended that rule. When the Necrons turned against the star gods and shattered them to end their tyranny, Aza’gorod was broken apart; the being known today as the Nightbringer is one such shard, bound into a container and kept, like its kin, as a weapon of its Necron captors rather than a free god. Millennia later the Aeldari encountered this shard and are recorded as having named it Kaelis Ra, an alias now attached to the Nightbringer rather than to the C’tan as a whole. The shard has since been read, awoken, or glimpsed at various sites across the galaxy, among them Pavonis, where its stirring forms part of local Necron activity. Some scholars link the shard’s awakenings to agents described as a Destroyer Cult, though this association is reported rather than confirmed.
The Nightbringer stands apart from Necron overlords and dynasties that merely serve the C’tan; it is instead one of the star gods those dynasties keep enslaved, a reminder that Necron civilisation was built on the subjugation of beings once treated as divine. It is counted alongside other named shards, such as the Deceiver, as evidence that no single fragment commands the full power or intent of the C’tan it was torn from. Its documented history binds it to three widely separated points in the setting’s chronology: the primordial War in Heaven, in which the Necrontyr first turned on their patrons; the Necron revolt that followed; and its more recent stirring at Pavonis, which situates the shard within the present era’s conflicts rather than only in myth.
