Pavonis

Pavonis is an Imperial mining world of the Ultima Segmentum, best known as the setting of the Nightbringer campaign fought against a C’tan shard. It is recorded as an industrial planet whose government rests on cartel-senates rather than a single planetary governor, and whose population is concentrated in hive cities. The most prominent of these is the hive capital of Brandon Gate, where much of the campaign took place. Its strategic importance lies in its mineral output and in its position in the south-eastern reaches of the Imperium, in territory that falls within the Ultramarines’ sphere of influence. It is not one of the ordered agricultural worlds associated with the inner Five Hundred Worlds of Ultramar.

The Nightbringer campaign began as a political crisis. A coup led by Kasimir de Valtos overturned the existing balance of power among the planet’s ruling interests. In the course of these events, the coup’s participants disturbed a tomb at Tembra Ridge, and a C’tan shard, a fragment of one of the star-gods of the Necron dynasties, was awakened. Accounts of the campaign associate the entity with the title of the Nightbringer, and its release turned a struggle over control of the planet into a wider threat to the Imperial holdings around it.

The Imperial response included the Ultramarines of the 4th Company, who were committed to Pavonis to restore order. They are recorded as having prevented the rendezvous of the flagship that was central to the conspirators’ plans, which denied the rebels a route off-world and a means of reinforcement. They could not, however, stop the awakened entity from escaping the planet. In the Orrery graph, Pavonis therefore serves as a link between the Ultramarines, the Necron awakenings of the 41st Millennium and the world-level insurrections that Imperial forces are called upon to suppress in the Ultima Segmentum.

Brandon Gate and Tembra Ridge are the principal map anchors for the world: the first as the seat of the coup and the main theatre of the fighting, the second as the site of the tomb. Kasimir de Valtos and the Ultramarines 4th Company are the chief timeline hooks. Later tradition does not describe Pavonis as a long-term fortress world or as a battlefield of comparable scale to the great crusades of the Ultramarines. Pavonis is notable both for the tomb war fought during the First Battle for Pavonis and for the T’au invasion repelled during the Second Battle for Pavonis. Years after the tomb war and before the Bloodborn invasion, reinstated captain Uriel Ventris fought off a T’au invasion of Pavonis, threatening to destroy the planet from orbit, and the T’au withdrew. Its present status as a mining world under Imperial rule is not detailed beyond the events of the campaign.
