Learchus Abantes is a Macragge-born Ultramarines sergeant who serves as the 4th Company’s adherent to the Codex Astartes. The Codex is the body of regulations he treats as the standard of conduct. For years he judged the company’s captain, Uriel Ventris, to fall short of that standard.
When Ventris and Pasanius boarded a hive ship over Tarsis Ultra, Learchus took charge of the company and afterwards reported their conduct. The report may be read either as the discharge of a duty or as confirmation of his earlier criticism. During their absence he kept Pavonis defended, and he came to recognise that the Codex does not provide for every circumstance. The Death Oath nevertheless went ahead, and Learchus remained responsible for bringing the company home.
Learchus is the officer through whom the 4th Company keeps its cohesion while its captain acts outside established practice. Ventris depends on that stability.
