Captain Idaeus

Captain Idaeus commanded the Ultramarines Fourth Company and taught Uriel Ventris, his successor, before dying on Thracia. He was an unorthodox officer who held that the Codex, the doctrinal text governing the Chapter’s conduct, sets a minimum standard rather than a limit. Ventris inherited both his power sword and command of the company.

Idaeus was raised on Macragge and died on Thracia, where his own conduct demonstrated the principle he had taught Ventris. On his death he left Ventris the power sword and the company. The Fourth retained Idaeus’s habit of reasoning beyond the written text of doctrine and applied it on Pavonis and in a number of later campaigns.

The Chapter regards Idaeus as a hero who bent doctrine without breaking faith. That course is a narrow one: captains who attempt it more often become cautionary examples than models, whereas Idaeus became a standard for others. Ventris carries the power sword, and the Fourth salutes Idaeus’s grave and treats his conduct as the measure of its own.
