Battle for Iyanden
The Battle for Iyanden was the assault by Hive Fleet Kraken on the Aeldari craftworld of Iyanden, recorded in the forty-first millennium. It is generally placed in the mid-forty-first millennium, after Kraken had split into separate tendrils on its advance from the galactic east. One of these tendrils turned upon Iyanden, a craftworld already regarded as depleted in living population, and its arrival set the Tyranid swarm against the largest surviving concentration of Iyanden’s dead-bound defenders, the wraithbone constructs animated by spirit stones. The defence rested chiefly on Iyanden’s wraithguard, wraithlords and the remaining Guardian and Aspect Warrior hosts, since the craftworld could not field a living army of comparable size. Accounts describe the swarm breaching the outer structure and fighting within the craftworld itself, so that the battle was contested as much in its corridors and dome-gardens as in the void. Relief is recorded as arriving from the craftworld of Ulthwé under the Farseer Eldrad Ulthran, together with the corsair prince Yriel and his followers; the precise order and scale of their intervention differs between accounts. The tendril is recorded as having been broken, though only after heavy losses among both defenders and relief forces. The immediate result was the survival of Iyanden, but at the cost of a population that had already been in decline and now fell further. The craftworld’s reliance on its spirit-host, rather than on living warriors, is commonly linked to this period, and the episode is an early instance of the Aeldari cooperating across craftworld lines against a Tyranid incursion. In the wider timeline, the battle belongs to the Kraken campaigns of the forty-first millennium and stands alongside the fortunes of Ulthwé, Eldrad Ulthran and Yriel as the closest graph neighbours on Orrery; how far its effects extended into the forty-second millennium is not firmly recorded.
