Iyanden Devastation
The Devastation of Iyanden was the Hive Fleet Kraken assault on the Aeldari craftworld of Iyanden in the forty-first millennium. It is recorded as one of the most damaging blows suffered by any craftworld in that era. The event belongs to the wider advance of Hive Fleet Kraken, a Tyranid splinter that entered the galaxy’s eastern reaches and moved through the Segmentum Ultima. Iyanden lay across its path, and the craftworld’s wandering course is recorded as bringing it into contact with the swarm. Iyanden was a large and populous craftworld, but its defences rested on a relatively small fleet and on a population that could not readily be replaced. The Tyranids are recorded as boarding the craftworld and engaging its inhabitants directly, rather than being halted at its outer defences. Casualties among the living Aeldari were severe. The infinity circuit that holds the souls of the dead was also placed under strain, because the craftworld’s population fell far below its former numbers. Iyanden’s defenders are recorded as turning to the constructs of its dead, chiefly Wraithguard and Wraithlords, whose use in such numbers marked a departure from the craftworld’s earlier practice. Other craftworlds and Aeldari war hosts are held to have sent aid, though accounts differ on its timing and extent. The precise chronology within the forty-first millennium is uncertain, and later tradition ties the battle closely to the movements of Hive Fleet Kraken. The swarm was ultimately repelled from Iyanden, but the craftworld did not recover its former strength. Its population remained a fraction of what it had been, and it has since relied more heavily on wraith-constructs than most other craftworlds, which shaped its later character and its standing among the Aeldari.
