Also known as Inquisitor Vail
Amberley Vail is an Inquisitor of the Ordo Xenos whose recorded career runs from the late forty-first millennium into the early forty-second. No homeworld is named for her. She is best known for a long professional and personal association with Commissar Ciaphas Cain, and for editing the private Cain Archive after his death. Her best-known legacy is editorial, but her own field career is attested on a number of worlds.
Her attested physical campaigns include the final cleansing of a genestealer cult on Keffia after the Guard had broken its strength; the Gravalax Incident of 931.M41, where she worked under singer’s cover and first drew Cain and his blank aide Ferik Jurgen into her circle; the plateau war on Periremunda against genestealers, Tyranids and the rogue inquisitor Killian over the Shadowlight; post-siege work on Perlia during the 13th Black Crusade; a debrief above Nusquam Fundumentibus after a buried Tyranid hive-ship was destroyed; her own underhive investigation on the forge world Ironfound; the mine war on Drechia entered by Webway; and a closing appearance on the forge moon Eucopia.
Vail habitually travels with a small retinue—among them the psyker Rakel, the savant Caractacus Mott, the hired gun Pelton, and at times Cain and Jurgen when she has need of a blank. She prefers the quiet approach to the loud, and leaves large parts of what she knows redacted even from those who read her footnotes.
