Fall of Sotha
The Fall of Sotha was the destruction of the Imperial world of Sotha, homeworld of the Scythes of the Emperor, by Hive Fleet Kraken in the 41st millennium. The event is one of the best-known losses attributed to Kraken, the Tyranid splinter fleet that entered Imperial space from the galactic south-east and cut through the Ultima Segmentum. Its importance in the wider narrative is twofold: it marks the removal of a Space Marine Chapter’s recruiting world and fortress-monastery, and it forms part of the sequence of invasions by which Kraken came to threaten the Ultramar region and neighbouring systems. Sotha is recorded as an Imperial world that served as the seat of the Scythes of the Emperor, a Space Marine Chapter of the Adeptus Astartes. Accounts of the invasion follow the usual Tyranid pattern. Advance organisms and vanguard broods reach a system, the defenders are engaged on the ground and in orbit, and the main bio-mass then arrives to strip the planet of organic matter. The Chapter, as the principal military power on the world, is recorded as having fought to defend it alongside local Imperial forces. Precise dates, the names of individual commanders and the sequence of engagements are not settled in the accounts available to this encyclopedia, and later tradition differs on some details.
