Belisarius Cawl is an Archmagos Dominus of the Adeptus Mechanicus, born on Mars in late M30 and still active in M42. He holds the titles Dominatus Dominus and, after the opening of the Great Rift, Prime Conduit of the Omnissiah. His flagship and principal laboratory is the Ark Mechanicus Zar-Quaesitor. Unlike many of his peers he is recorded as seeking innovation rather than the mere recovery of lost designs, a stance that has earned both followers and the charge of heretek within the Cult Mechanicus.
During the Horus Heresy he served as a Tech-Acolyte on Trisolian A-4 under Magos Domina Hester Aspertia Sigma-Sigma. When Aspertia surrendered the forge to Horus, Cawl and his colleague Friedisch Adum Silip Qvo killed her, and Cawl absorbed her intelligence core before escaping to Ryza and later Terra. After the Heresy, Roboute Guilliman charged him with two secret labours should the primarch fall: the creation of improved Space Marines and Guilliman’s own revival. Cawl worked on both for some ten thousand years, combining other minds into his own gestalt and sustaining himself by means that remain imperfectly recorded.
In the Thirteenth Black Crusade he reached Cadia in person, fought beside Lord Castellan Ursarkar E. Creed, Saint Celestine and others, and worked with the Necron overlord Trazyn the Infinite to activate the Cadian pylons before fleeing with a sealed artefact as the world broke. On the ice moon Klaisus, Eldrad Ulthran and the Ynnari opened a webway route that carried Cawl’s party toward Ultramar. On Macragge he revived Guilliman with Armour of Fate and Eldar aid, then accompanied the Terran Crusade to Terra and returned to Mars to complete the Primaris project. In the Era Indomitus he led Battle Group Hephaestus of Fleet Primus into the Pariah Nexus, struck Planet 7-2, investigated the Pharos on Sotha for his Great Work against the Rift, and on Ulvheim activated a Necron pylon array that sealed the Pit of Raukos against Vashtorr’s assault.
