Barabas Dantioch

Warsmith, Warden of the Pharos

Also known as Warsmith Dantioch

Homeworld: Olympia

Barabas Dantioch was an Iron Warriors Warsmith who served the Imperium as a loyalist and died at the Pharos on Sotha during the Horus Heresy. Born on Olympia, the Legion’s home world, he rose to the rank of Warsmith in the IV Legion, whose primarch, Perturabo, is recorded as having discarded him as damaged. Dantioch nevertheless remained in the Imperium’s service, and his career is notable because it shows a Warsmith of a Legion that turned traitor acting against that Legion’s allegiance. Later accounts present him as the kind of loyalist the Iron Warriors might have kept had Perturabo judged its officers differently.

His first recorded deed is the defence of the Schadenhold. He held the fortress through a year of siege against traitor forces, and when it could no longer be kept he collapsed it onto a corrupted Titan. He then seized the traitors’ own prize as he withdrew. The action reflects the Iron Warriors’ siegecraft turned to loyalist ends: the fortress was used as an instrument of destruction rather than surrendered intact. Roboute Guilliman of the XIII Legion subsequently gave Dantioch a task of greater strategic weight, sending him to Sotha to reactivate the Pharos, a xenos beacon whose light bore on the security of Ultramar. From that charge he took the title Warden of the Pharos.

On Sotha, Dantioch’s most significant relationship was with the Imperial Fists captain Alexis Polux. Polux arrived resentful of the iron on Dantioch’s armour, a reasonable attitude given the enmity between the Imperial Fists and the Iron Warriors, and departed addressing him as brother. When the Night Lords came for the beacon, Dantioch overcharged the xenos engine and burned himself out. His purpose was to prevent the light of Ultramar from becoming a map for Krukesh and the traitor force pursuing it. He died in Polux’s arms at the Pharos and did not return to Olympia. The Schadenhold and Sotha (sotha-2843 on the Orrery map) together form the record of his loyalty, and they place him among the Horus Heresy’s better-attested loyalist Iron Warriors, alongside Guilliman, Polux and Perturabo in the wider account of Ultramar’s defence.
