Sotha

Sotha is an agri-world in Ultramar whose Mount Pharos conceals a Necron beacon, discovered by the XIII Legion in 882.M30. The find was catalogued rather than exploited in the immediate aftermath, and the world was settled as a farming colony serving the wider Five Hundred Worlds, with the dormant xenos structure left largely undisturbed beneath the mountain.

Sotha’s strategic value emerged only during the Horus Heresy, when Roboute Guilliman’s Imperium Secundus needed a means of guiding loyalist fleets through the warp storms isolating Ultramar from Terra. The Iron Warriors Warsmith Barabas Dantioch, exiled to Sotha after falling foul of his own Legion, is recorded as having reactivated and adapted the Necron pylon into the Pharos: a beacon capable of cutting through the storms to mark safe passage for Imperium Secundus shipping. The installation drew the attention of the Night Lords, whose forces assaulted Mount Pharos in an attempt to silence it, with Dantioch’s defence of the site becoming one of the lesser-known actions of the Heresy fought outside Terra and Ultramar’s main battle lines.

In the Heresy’s aftermath, garrison duty over Sotha and its beacon passed to the Scythes of the Emperor, a Chapter that made the world its fortress-monastery and maintained the Pharos as a navigational asset for millennia. That watch ended during the Third Tyrannic War, when Hive Fleet Kraken descended on the Sotha system around 992.M41 and consumed the planet’s biosphere, an assault that left the Scythes of the Emperor reduced to a remnant of their former strength and Sotha itself rendered barren.

In the present era, Archmagos Dominus Belisarius Cawl has directed efforts to restore Sotha’s ecology using genetic and botanical samples held in reserve on Macragge, part of Ultramar’s broader recovery following the depredations of the Great Rift. The world’s recorded history thus binds together the Great Crusade’s discovery of a Necron relic, its repurposing during Imperium Secundus, the long vigil of the Scythes of the Emperor, and the ongoing question of what, if anything, Sotha will become again.
