War of Beasts / Vigilus
The War of Beasts was the Imperium’s defence of the hive world Vigilus against xenos and Chaos incursions from 999.M41 into M42. Vigilus lies in the Vigilus System of the Nachmund Sub-sector, Segmentum Obscurus, at the terminus of the Nachmund Gauntlet, one of the few stable routes through the Great Rift connecting the Imperium Sanctus to the Imperium Nihilus. Its later stages, marked by a renewed Chaos offensive, are also remembered as the War of Nightmares. The conflict is unconnected to the War of the Beast, an Orkoid uprising against the fledgling Imperium some ten millennia earlier, despite the similarity of name. The opening of the Cicatrix Maledictum, the Great Rift, in the late 41st Millennium stranded Vigilus on the threshold of the Imperium Nihilus and made the Nachmund Gauntlet indispensable to the Imperium’s survival as a single polity. The psychic devastation accompanying the Rift’s formation crippled the world’s defences, and its fractious ruling body, the Aquilarian Council, proved ill-suited to a coordinated response. Vigilus had also long harboured a hidden Genestealer Cult infestation, and with the planet’s guard weakened, this conspiracy rose in open rebellion even as a Waaagh! of Orks, traditionally identified with the warlord Ghazghkull Thraka, broke through from the wastelands to assault the hive-sprawls. Astra Militarum and Adepta Sororitas garrisons bore the initial brunt of the fighting, containing the Ork advance until Space Marine reinforcements arrived from beyond the Stygius Sector, led by Marneus Calgar, Chapter Master of the Ultramarines, together with elements of the Adeptus Custodes. As the Imperium regained ground, Abaddon the Despoiler despatched the Black Legion under the Raptor Haarken Worldclaimer to seize Vigilus outright and sever the Gauntlet by exploiting the altered blackstone deposits within its crust, while Drukhari and Craftworld Aeldari raiders exploited the disorder for their own ends. Though Vigilus suffered immense destruction, its defenders ultimately denied Abaddon outright possession of the world, and the principal focus of the war shifted elsewhere even as Chaos and xenos remnants persisted within its hive-sprawls. Vigilus survived as a battered but functioning gateway, sustaining Imperial resupply and astropathic contact with the Imperium Nihilus. The struggle for control of the Nachmund Gauntlet continued at the war for Sangua Terra, the separate world forming the Gauntlet’s counterpart beachhead on the far side of the Great Rift. Chapter Master Pedro Kantor of the Crimson Fists brought five companies to Vigilus after news of the fighting reached him. He presented himself to the Vigilus Senate, conferred with Marneus Calgar, and was assigned against the Genestealer Cult of the Pauper Princes at the Hyperia–Dirkden Fortwall, where the Crimson Fists concentrated on evacuating civilians. When Calgar left the planet to confront Abaddon the Despoiler in the void, he left Kantor in charge of Vigilus’s defence. The first Space Marines to reach Vigilus were the Iron Hands and their successor Chapter the Brazen Claws, who had been bound for the Stygius Crusade but turned aside on learning of the danger to their Mechanicus allies. They were led by Kardan Stronos, the de facto Chapter Master of the Iron Hands, who launched drop pod landings in the fringe zones of every remaining Imperial hivesprawl before converging on the Mechanicus stronghold of Megaborealis. Expecting Orks, the Iron Hands found themselves fighting mostly Genestealer Cultists. Stronos ultimately brought eight Clan Companies of the Iron Hands and two companies of the Brazen Claws to the war; the Kaargul Clan helped Archmagos Nesium Caldrike to stall the Genestealer advance at Megaborealis, and an Iron Hands artillery strike later destroyed a force of World Eaters there.
