Vigilus

Vigilus is a dry hive world on the Nachmund Gauntlet, one of the few stable crossings of the Great Rift. Most of its surface is barren dust, and water is rationed so carefully that its possession marks social rank among the population of its hive cities, known locally as sprawls. The planet’s importance is purely strategic: whoever controls Vigilus controls one of the last dependable routes between the Imperium’s core territories and the cut-off reaches of Imperium Nihilus beyond the Rift.

That importance was tested during the War of Beasts, when Bastion-class void shields meant to seal the sprawls were breached in turn by an Ork Waaagh! under Warboss Da Beast Skalek, the genestealer Cult of the Four-Armed Emperor rising from within, Aeldari raiders seeking a buried webway gate, and the Black Legion under Warlord Anuran Skarov and later Haarken Worldclaimer. Marneus Calgar took personal command of the defence, fighting alongside the Imperial Fists under Tor Garadon and the world’s own Volscani Cataphracts regiments, while Archmagos Belisarius Cawl oversaw the activation of archeotech assets beneath the hives. The campaign is credited with keeping the Nachmund crossing in Imperial hands.

Vigilus was contested in the War of Nightmares, a phase of the War of Beasts in which Ezekyle Abaddon’s Black Legion fought for the world. Rotigus is named among the commanders of the wider war, not as the commander of that phase. The Imperium held the world after Abaddon withdrew. During the Indomitus era, Roboute Guilliman and Cato Sicarius extended operations into the wider Nachmund theatre from Vigilus as a forward base, underlining the world’s continuing role as an anchor point for Imperial efforts to hold the Rift’s margins. Vigilus has yet to know a settled peace since the Great Rift opened, and its hives remain a recurring flashpoint in the ongoing contest for the Nachmund Gauntlet.
