Aun’Va
Ethereal Supreme, Master of the Undying Spirit
Also known as Aun'o T'au Acaya'Va'Denta, Master of the Undying Spirit
Homeworld: T'au
Aun’Va was Ethereal Supreme of the T’au Empire, its foremost Ethereal and the public voice of the Greater Good until his assassination at Mu’gulath Bay. As senior-most member of the Ethereal caste and presiding voice of the Ethereal Council, he stood above even named contemporaries such as Aun’Shi, and his word carried more practical authority over T’au policy than any fire-caste commander’s. His second title, Master of the Undying Spirit, marked him as custodian of the accumulated wisdom the Ethereal caste claims to hold across generations, a lineage the Empire presents as continuous and undying even when its individual bearers are not.
Aun’Va rose to prominence as the doctrine of the Greater Good was carried outward through the T’au Empire’s successive spheres of expansion, and he served as its principal orator through the Third Sphere Expansion, addressing Fire Warriors directly to explain why each new sphere justified further sacrifice. He worked alongside Commander Shadowsun during this period, she providing the military execution of expansion while he supplied its ideological justification, a division of authority that placed the Ethereal caste’s command over fire-caste forces beyond question in public view. The schism of Commander Farsight, who rejected Ethereal primacy outright, stands as the clearest counter-example of how contested that authority could be beneath the Empire’s official unity.
His death came at Mu’gulath Bay, where the T’au Empire’s Third Sphere Expansion brought it into direct conflict with the Imperium of Man and, through it, the Officio Assassinorum. A Culexus assassin, trained to defeat psychically-attuned and telepathically-linked targets, killed Aun’Va there, ending the life of the Ethereal caste’s most senior figure at the height of an expansion he had spent his public life justifying. The Ethereal Council chose not to announce this to the wider Empire: holographic projections of Aun’Va continue to deliver his speeches to Fire Warriors and citizens alike, and the castes continue to bow before them exactly as they did before a living Ethereal Supreme.
Shadowsun is among the very few individuals known to be aware that the addresses no longer originate from a living Aun’Va, and the Empire’s continued stability rests in part on that knowledge staying confined to a small circle around her and the Ethereal Council. The arrangement admits two readings within T’au philosophy: either an efficient, self-effacing application of the Greater Good, in which the message matters more than the messenger, or a tacit admission that the Empire cannot yet afford to acknowledge the death of its highest Ethereal. Either way, the title of Ethereal Supreme has outlived the man who held it, binding Aun’Va’s legacy permanently to the Third Sphere Expansion and to Mu’gulath Bay as the place where the T’au Empire’s public certainty and its private secrecy came to depend on each other.
