Commander Shadowsun

Commander Shadowsun is a T’au Empire Fire Caste commander of Vior’la Sept who led the Empire’s armies in the Third Sphere Expansion. Known in her own language as Shas’O Vior’la Shaserra, or O’Shaserra, she holds the highest rank of the Fire Caste and is regarded as one of the Empire’s most capable field generals. She is associated with the doctrine of Kauyon, the “patient hunter” style of war that draws an enemy into a prepared position before delivering a single decisive stroke, and she fights in a stealth-pattern XV22 Battlesuit escorted by drones.

Shadowsun was a pupil of the veteran commander Puretide, who is recorded as having taught two students he judged fit to inherit his art: Shadowsun, who favoured Kauyon, and Farsight, who favoured the swift strike of Mont’ka. Accounts hold that her early successes led the Ethereals to place her in stasis, preserving her for later need. She was revived after Farsight left the Empire’s campaign in the Damocles Gulf against the wishes of the Ethereal caste, and Aun’Va, the Ethereal Supreme, gave her command in his place. In the Third Sphere Expansion she directed T’au forces in the Damocles Gulf, where the Empire’s advance brought it into sustained conflict with the Imperium of Man.

Shadowsun’s standing rests on this pairing with Farsight, her contemporary and counterpart: he is the exile who founded the Farsight Enclaves, she the commander who remained loyal to the Ethereals and the doctrine of the Greater Good. Her home sept, Vior’la, is known for its aggressive martial tradition, and she is often named alongside the T’au sept, the Empire’s founding population, in accounts of the Empire’s leadership. Her present position is that of an active supreme commander in the later Sphere Expansions, though the precise dating of individual campaigns after the Damocles Gulf is not firmly fixed on the present record. On the map, her career is bound to Vior’la and the T’au heartland; on the timeline, to the Third Sphere Expansion.
