Longstrike
Hammerhead ace, Tank commander
Also known as T'au Sha'ng, Shas'la T'au Sha'ng
Homeworld: T'au
Longstrike is a T’au Fire Caste Hammerhead ace who won his name at Taros, disabling an Imperial Warhound Titan with a single railgun shot. He is a Fire Caste gunner of the T’au Empire, not a member of any elevated lineage, and his standing rests on gunnery, patience and a willingness to hold a firing position after the vehicles fighting beside his own had been destroyed or withdrawn. The T’au Empire prizes coordinated fire over individual glory, yet it treats his record as a demonstration of what disciplined application of the Greater Good can achieve at the level of a single crew.
The action that made his name took place during the T’au campaign for Taros, a desert world contested by Astra Militarum armoured columns advancing under heavy Imperial artillery and air support. The world is the fixed point of his story: the T’au presence there, set against the Imperium’s materiel superiority, is the setting in which his Hammerhead gunship became notable. As the fighting drew out, his vehicle remained in the engagement zone and traded railgun fire with Leman Russ squadrons at ranges most crews would consider prohibitive. His crew is recorded as having destroyed enemy battle tanks at a ratio of roughly six to one. In the same engagement a single railgun shot struck the head assembly of an Imperial Warhound Titan and disabled it, a result rarely achieved by conventional armour against a target of that class. The name Longstrike attached itself to him after that shot, and accounts describe it as replacing the one he had borne before. His conduct is consistent with the patient, defensive style of hunting that T’au commanders describe as kauyon, in which a force holds ground and lets the enemy come into its guns.
In recognition of his conduct on Taros, Fire Caste command assigned him the XV02 pilot battlesuit, a configuration built around his Hammerhead that dispenses with a separate gunner. Longstrike aims and fires the railgun directly through the suit’s interface, a task divided between two crew members in every other Hammerhead in T’au service. This makes him a unique variation on a common Fire Caste vehicle rather than a commander of others, and it sets him apart from the cadre-based practice of the T’au military. His relationships are correspondingly institutional rather than personal. He answers to Fire Caste command and to the Ethereal insistence that any individual feat serve the collective purpose of the sept. His principal opponents are the Astra Militarum tank formations and Titan support he faced at Taros, and he is not recorded as having a named rival, mentor or protégé.
In the graph, Longstrike is bound to Taros and to the T’au homeworld region, and his single attested action belongs to the period of T’au expansion against Imperial defenders rather than to any of the major Imperial crusades. He has neither sought nor been given advancement beyond the junior ranks of the Fire Caste, and he has not contested the omission. What became of him after Taros, and whether he has fought in later T’au campaigns, is not recorded, so his status is given as active. His name endures chiefly as the account of a single sustained action rather than as a continuous service history. Related entries include the T’au Empire, the Fire Caste, Taros, the Hammerhead gunship and the Astra Militarum forces that opposed him.
