Commander Puretide

Commander Puretide was a Fire Caste commander of the T’au Empire, born on Dal’yth, whose military doctrine remains foundational to T’au strategy. During the Second Sphere Expansion he rose through the Fire Caste’s command schools and helped found new septs as the empire pushed outward, refining a style of warfare built on disciplined long-range fire support, mobile manoeuvre, and close coordination between infantry cadres, battlesuit teams and gun drones. By the time the T’au turned to defend their border worlds, his methods had already displaced older, more static doctrines and were taught as the standard against which other Fire Caste commanders measured themselves.

Puretide’s active career ended at Dal’yth during the Damocles Gulf Crusade (742.M41), when he led the defence of his home world against Imperial incursion and suffered wounds severe enough to end his field command. Rather than accept a diminished role, he withdrew to a hermitage on Mount Kan’ji, where he spent his final years composing a treatise on strategy and accepting a small number of personal students. Three are recorded by name: Farsight, Shadowsun and Kais. Each absorbed a different part of his teaching rather than the whole of it, a fact later commanders and the Ethereals themselves treated as significant, since no single successor could be said to carry Puretide’s complete doctrine forward.

On Puretide’s death, the Ethereals had his mind scanned and preserved as a neural engram, later carried on a data chip and consulted by field commanders much as a living strategist might be. Commander Farsight, regarded by many as his most naturally gifted student, is recorded as having refused the engram’s guidance in later campaigns, a rejection bound up with his wider estrangement from Ethereal authority and eventual departure to found the Farsight Enclaves beyond the Damocles Gulf. Shadowsun and Kais, by contrast, continued to draw openly on his teaching in their own commands. Puretide’s remains are held to lie as ash on Mount Kan’ji; his doctrine survives in T’au military instruction, in the treatise attributed to him, and in the engram that continues to advise the empire’s war councils.
