Aun’shi
Ethereal
Also known as Aun'o T'au Acaya'vesa
Homeworld: Ke'lshan
Aun’shi is an Ethereal of the T’au Empire’s Ke’lshan sept, unusual among his caste for a reputation earned in battle rather than in counsel. The Ethereals form the T’au Empire’s ruling caste, and tradition holds that they guide the T’au peoples through contemplation and oratory rather than arms. Aun’shi departed from that norm during prolonged fighting against Ork incursions on Ke’lshan, a sept world on the Empire’s frontier, where the pressures of sustained war drew him from the shrine and onto the field.
In the Ke’lshan campaign, Aun’shi carried an honour blade into the front line at a moment when the Fire Caste, the T’au Empire’s warrior caste, had been slow to muster a response to the Ork advance. His willingness to fight in the caste’s stead was read by many as a rebuke of that delay, and it marked him as an Ethereal whose authority rested as much on demonstrated courage as on doctrine. He was captured during the fighting and held prisoner before being recovered, an episode that later accounts treat as the origin of his standing as a battlefield exemplar rather than a purely ceremonial figure.
Aun’shi’s path is often set against that of Commander Farsight, the Fire Caste officer whose break from the Ke’lshan sept and eventual departure from the Empire placed him outside Ethereal authority altogether. Where Farsight’s example is invoked as a warning about Fire Caste ambition unmoored from the Ethereal caste, Aun’shi’s is invoked as proof that the same caste’s discipline can be reconciled with combat when necessity demands it. The senior Ethereal leadership, exercising authority over the caste from the T’au homeworld of T’au, draws on both figures for different audiences, and the contrast between the two has become a recurring point of reference wherever Ke’lshan’s wars are recounted.
Aun’shi remains active within the T’au Empire and continues to serve as a symbol of the Greater Good, the philosophy that binds the T’au castes to their shared purpose. The Fire Caste treats his conduct at Ke’lshan as though it were settled doctrine, citing it to justify Ethereal presence on dangerous fronts, even though the Ethereal caste as a whole still favours guidance from the shrine over the battlefield. His continued service illustrates how a single episode of a caste member acting against type can be absorbed into an empire that otherwise prizes strict adherence to caste roles.
