Khai-Zhan Uprising
The Khai-Zhan Uprising was a rebellion against Night Lords terror-rule on Khai-Zhan, recorded within the Traitor Legion’s Long War in the tenth millennium. Imperial and Chaos-aligned sources alike place it among the many episodes in which the VIII Legion, scattered and shipless since the destruction of their homeworld Nostramo, returned to subject or raid worlds under their sway; Khai-Zhan is named among the domains drawn into that orbit, and the uprising there is treated as a local test of the Legion’s long-standing method of ruling through fear rather than garrison. Accounts differ on the uprising’s precise course, but the pattern ascribed to it follows the Night Lords’ known practice: a decapitation strike against local authority, followed by a deliberate withdrawal intended to let terror and internal suspicion do the work of pacification in the Legion’s absence. Khai-Zhan’s populace is said to have used that very absence to organise against their occupiers, drawing on grievances that stretched back to earlier Night Lords visitations and to the wider resentment such tactics bred across the Legion’s hunting grounds. No single battle or commander is reliably attested for the rising; later tradition holds that its leadership was fractured and its aims limited to survival rather than conquest. The uprising’s outcome is not settled in the record, and Khai-Zhan’s current status under either Imperial or Chaos authority is uncertain. Its chief significance to the wider narrative lies in its place alongside Nostramo in the Night Lords’ history: where Nostramo supplied the Legion’s founding doctrine of rule by dread, Khai-Zhan is remembered as one of the worlds on which that doctrine was tested, and found, at least for a time, resistible.
