Gendor Skraivok, the Painted Count, was a Night Lords captain who let a daemon-blade do his thinking and called the arrangement ambition. He stole Sevatar's first captaincy in all but legitimacy, botched the Lion's Gate spaceport, and found that a sword which whispers victories is less useful when the walls are full of Imperial Fists who do not care about Nostraman rank.
After Sotha he sat on the Nightfall hated by Shang and distrusted by everyone else, using the blade as a ladder. Terra was the test. He failed it in public, fell from the spaceport, and learned the daemon had always been collecting a body rather than lending a weapon.
What came back was not a count. Nostramo breeds officers who think fear is a staff. Skraivok outsourced the staff work to something in the Warp. The Painted Count is still a title. The man is a passenger.
