Zso Sahaal
First Captain, The Talonmaster
Also known as The Talonmaster, The Betrayer
Homeworld: Terra
Zso Sahaal, called the Talonmaster, was a First Captain of the Night Lords Traitor Legion, whose pursuit of M’Shen ended in the loss of his company. He was born on Terra and served in the Legion as a captain of the Kyroptera, the Terran-born element that stood apart from the Nostramo-born majority. He rose to First Captain after Sevatar was written off, and by his own account Konrad Curze had selected him for the Corona Nox. That claim is recorded as his own; it is not independently confirmed, and it was contested within the Legion from the outset.
The promotion divided the First Company. Half of its warriors never accepted Sahaal in the place Sevatar had held, and the disagreement shaped what followed. Sahaal led the First Company in pursuit of M’Shen and lost it in the attempt. Brothers who had remained behind to fight the Eldar named him Betrayer, and the name outlasted the dispute over its cause. The episode is anchored on the Orrery map at Tsagualsa, and it falls within the Horus Heresy era, when the Night Lords were already fractured between Curze’s loyalists and captains pursuing separate purposes. Accounts differ on how far Sahaal’s decisions, rather than the circumstances, were responsible for the loss.
A warp storm then confined Sahaal in sus-an sleep, a form of suspended animation, for ten millennia. He woke after a crash on Equixus, where he rebuilt a hive-cult around himself and revived the title of Talonmaster. This places his second period of activity in the era of the Long War and the Black Crusades, roughly ten thousand years after the events at Tsagualsa. On Equixus he fought a duel with Krieg Acerbus, a rival Night Lords leader, over the same crown that each of them claimed a right to. Sahaal escaped with a ruined arm and a relic that no one else agreed was a sceptre. He did not obtain the crown, which an assassin had already taken.
By the Thirteenth Black Crusade Sahaal had disappeared again, and his status is therefore recorded as missing rather than dead. Contemporaries and interactions place him among the Night Lords’ competing claimants to Curze’s legacy: Sevatar, whose removal opened his path; the loyal and disloyal brothers of the First Company; and Acerbus, his rival on Equixus. His account remains one among several, and none has been established as authoritative. Related dossiers on the Night Lords, Konrad Curze, Sevatar, Nostramo and Terra place him in the wider graph of the Legion and its history.
