Adeptus Custodes
Also known as Adeptus Custodes
The Adeptus Custodes are the Emperor’s personal bodyguard and the guardians of the Imperial Palace on Terra. Where the Legiones Astartes, and later the Space Marine Chapters, are raised from mass gene-seed implantation and organised into companies and squads, each Custodian is held to be an individually created warrior, shaped and trained to a standard of skill and endurance beyond even the Adeptus Astartes. Their allegiance is to the Emperor alone, and tradition holds that even Space Marines and officers of the Inquisition kneel in their presence within the Imperial Palace.
The order traces its origins to the Unification Wars on Terra, when it was known as the Legio Custodes or Custodian Guard, formed as the Emperor’s personal retinue during the campaigns that unified the Throneworld. Its early recruits are recorded as drawn from the households of Terran nobility, some later organised into the Squad Dynastes. The Custodes are led by a Captain-General, a rank that has carried a seat among the Senate of the High Lords of Terra, with Tribunes historically ranking beneath. Alongside the Sisters of Silence, the Custodes are remembered as the Talons of the Emperor, the Custodian Guard acting as the right hand to the Sisters’ left in safeguarding their master.
During the Great Crusade, Custodians such as Constantin Valdor accompanied the Emperor and also travelled individually as His envoys, the Emperor being reluctant to commit them to battle as freely as His other forces. The War in the Webway and the Siege of Terra during the Horus Heresy tested the order most severely, culminating in the Emperor’s mortal wounding and subsequent interment upon the Golden Throne. In the aftermath, Roboute Guilliman’s Edict of Restraint confined the Custodes almost entirely to the Imperial Palace, a limitation accounts describe them observing for ten thousand years, broken only by episodes such as their intervention during the Age of Apostasy against the usurper Goge Vandire.
The resurrection of Roboute Guilliman in the Era Indomitus altered this long watch. After his return to Terra and the fighting against the Thousand Sons on Luna, Guilliman and Captain-General Trajann Valoris amended the Edict of Restraint, permitting Custodian forces to campaign beyond Terra for the first time in millennia, including alongside the Indomitus Crusade. The Adeptus Custodes thus remain bound to the Throneworld and the Golden Throne as their first charge, while also standing once more among the Imperium’s warriors on wider battlefields, contemporaries of figures such as Valdor and Guilliman across both the Heresy and the present age.
