Constantin Valdor

Captain-General of the Adeptus Custodes

Also known as The First of the Ten Thousand

Homeworld: Terra

Constantin Valdor was Captain-General of the Adeptus Custodes, commander of the Emperor’s Ten Thousand from the Unification Wars to the Horus Heresy. As senior of the Custodian Guard he answered to the Emperor alone, and his office made him the principal military officer of the Imperial Palace on Terra. He is recorded as having served in the Emperor’s direct company since the wars of Unification, and the Custodes he commanded were the Emperor’s personal guard, not a Legion. In the Imperial record that distinction places him outside the chain of command of the Primarchs and the Legiones Astartes, while still making him a central figure in the defence of Terra.

During the Horus Heresy the Captain-General remained at the Palace, in keeping with the Emperor’s standing instruction that the Custodes guard Terra and its Throne. He worked alongside Malcador the Sigillite, who governed in the Emperor’s absence, and with Rogal Dorn, whose Imperial Fists were charged with the Palace’s fortification. The Sisters of Silence, the Null Maidens whose presence suppresses psychic power, served in the same defence as a companion order of the Custodes. Custodian forces are recorded as fighting in the War Within the Webway, where the Emperor’s work beneath the Palace was under threat, and in the Siege of Terra, where the Eternity Wall and the Palace’s inner precincts were held against the forces of Horus Lupercal and the Traitor Legions. Accounts differ on the detail of Valdor’s individual actions during the siege, but he is recorded as present at the ending of Horus Lupercal and the Emperor’s subsequent entombment upon the Golden Throne.

In the war’s aftermath Valdor is recorded as naming Ezekyle Abaddon ‘Despoiler’ for his part in the Traitors’ flight, before he laid down the Captain-Generalcy and departed Terra on a purpose that has not been made public. Trajann Valoris later holds the same office, and the Custodes continue to watch over the Throne through the era of the Imperium’s decline. Valdor’s fate after his withdrawal is not a matter of confirmed record, and the Apollonian Spear remains associated with his person in Custodes tradition. On the Orrery map he is anchored to Terra, and on the timeline to the Custodes’ service from the Unification Wars through the Heresy.
