Iron Cage
The Iron Cage denotes the imprisonment and public display of captured Imperial Fists by the Iron Warriors during the opening battles of the Horus Heresy. The episode is recorded as one of the earliest and most deliberate cruelties of Horus Lupercal’s rebellion, arising from a lifelong contest of standing between Rogal Dorn and Perturabo, the two primarch-brothers each renowned as a master builder in the Emperor’s service. Perturabo’s homeworld of Olympia, a world he had reshaped through siegecraft and hard governance before the Great Crusade’s end, is held to have sharpened the resentment he carried into the act: a wish to prove his Legion’s mastery of fortification and destruction superior to his brother’s. Accounts describe the Iron Warriors, alongside allied Traitor forces, ambushing a fleet of loyalist Space Marines at Phall as it moved toward Isstvan III in the days after Horus’s treachery there was set in motion. A company of Imperial Fists serving under First Captain Sigismund was cut off and driven to ground; its survivors, disarmed and denied relief, were taken captive rather than killed outright. The Iron Warriors then confined the prisoners within iron gibbets raised in full view of the battlefield, a calculated humiliation intended less to punish the captives than to provoke Rogal Dorn and the wider Imperial Fists Legion. The Iron Cage left a lasting enmity between the two Legions that later accounts trace through the remainder of the Horus Heresy, colouring encounters across the war’s subsequent campaigns and resurfacing when Iron Warriors and Imperial Fists met again as adversaries during the Siege of Terra. Within the wider chronicle of the era, the episode stands as an early measure of Perturabo’s turn toward calculated cruelty and of the Iron Warriors’ doctrine that a fortress-breaker’s contempt for an enemy is itself a weapon, a doctrine traceable to the hard lessons of Olympia under his rule.
