Kroeger

Kroeger was an Iron Warriors commander of Perturabo’s Trident and later a Warsmith, recorded as having died during the siege of Hydra Cordatus. The Iron Warriors were the Fourth Legion of the Space Marines, raised on Olympia and led by the primarch Perturabo, the Lord of Iron. The Trident was the small group of senior commanders that served Perturabo directly, and Kroeger held one of its seats with the title of Triarch. He was valued chiefly as a fighter and only secondarily as a siege strategist, a reputation that sets him apart from the engineers and planners for whom the Legion is better known.

He is recorded as having risen from the rank of lieutenant under Harkor to a place on the Trident during the period in which the Legion was drifting towards the worship of Khorne. Perturabo needed a commander who would carry a fortified position by direct assault once the preparatory bombardment and sapping were done, and Kroeger filled that role. His career therefore belongs to two widely separated periods of the Legion’s history: the years of the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy, when the Trident was formed, and the Long War that followed, in which he appears as a Warsmith in the company of Falk. Accounts of his earlier campaigns are sparse, and this dossier does not assign him to particular sieges of the Heresy.

The Iron Warriors of the later era are shaped by three commanders who represent different approaches to war. Forrix relied on calculation and the patient reduction of a fortress, Honsou on scheming and the manipulation of rivals, and Kroeger on slaughter at close quarters. At Hydra Cordatus, the world on which the Imperial Fists’ and later Iron Warriors’ siege is fought, he is recorded as favouring a direct engagement over a methodical siege, and he was killed in the fighting there. Olympia, the Legion’s homeworld, is associated with siege commanders, and Kroeger shows that the Legion also produced commanders whose strength lay in assault. His death at Hydra Cordatus ends a line of service that runs from Perturabo’s Trident to the warbands of the Iron Cage.
