Knight Commander Pask

Knight Commander

Also known as Commander Pask, Tank Commander Pask

Homeworld: Cadia

Knight Commander Pask is a Cadian tank ace of the 423rd Regiment, renowned across the Astra Militarum for his gunnery aboard the Leman Russ battle tank. ‘Knight Commander’ is an honorific earned through reputation rather than a formal Officio Prefectus rank, reflecting his standing as the foremost living exponent of Cadian armoured doctrine. He is closely identified with Cadia itself, and with the wider culture of gunnery discipline that the Cadian Shock Troops carried into every theatre in which they served, long after the loss of their home world.

Pask began his career as a gunner aboard the Leman Russ Hand of Steel, assuming command only after an Ork Bonecruncha, a Gargant-class war engine, crushed his commanding officer during battle. He went on to prove the Leman Russ platform capable of feats usually reserved for far larger vehicles, destroying Titan-class engines with standard battle cannon shells through patient, precise marksmanship rather than brute firepower. When offered promotion to a super-heavy Baneblade, he declined it, choosing to remain with a regiment that continued to field the Leman Russ, a decision that became emblematic of his preference for skill over scale and cemented his reputation among Cadian armoured crews.

Pask was engaged against T’au Empire forces on a distant front in 999.M41 when Abaddon the Despoiler’s Thirteenth Black Crusade fell upon Cadia, and so was absent for the homeworld’s destruction, an event that scattered the Cadian regiments and reshaped the Astra Militarum around commanders such as Lord Castellan Ursarkar Creed, who led the survivors into exile and later conquest on Cadia’s ashes. Rather than treat his absence as a private grief, Pask converted it into an institutional response, founding the Steel Tithe, a programme through which he drills tank crews drawn from other worlds until their gunnery and discipline match the standards once set by Cadia itself. In this way he has become, alongside Creed, one of the figures through whom Cadian military culture persists after the loss of the fortress world that produced it.

Accounts of Pask’s later fate diverge: one tradition holds that he died leading the final charge on his home world during its fall, while the 423rd Regiment, which still observes the operational habits and gunnery rituals he instilled, rejects that claim and continues to credit him as active. Pask has little regard for ceremonial honours, concentrating instead on identifying and exploiting structural weaknesses in enemy armour, a habit that has become doctrine within his regiment. The exacting standards he established continue to govern how the 423rd, and increasingly the crews trained under the Steel Tithe, prepare for battle in the Imperium’s ongoing war beyond the Cadian Gate.
