Lady Malys
Archon of the Poisoned Tongue, The Mazeweaver
Also known as Aurelia Malys, The Mazeweaver
Homeworld: Commorragh
Lady Aurelia Malys, the Mazeweaver, rules the Kabal of the Poisoned Tongue from Commorragh, the Dark City of the Drukhari. For centuries she was the consort of Asdrubael Vect, supreme overlord of the city and the most enduring tyrant in Drukhari history. She ended that relationship by her own choice rather than his, a distinction Commorragh’s Archons treat as remarkable in itself, since almost no one leaves Vect’s inner circle and lives. In the centuries since, she has built the Poisoned Tongue into a kabal capable of standing apart from his patronage, and has made demonstrating that independence, publicly and repeatedly, a central project of her rule.
Malys is best known for a faculty her own kabalites call foresight: she is said to hold several possible futures in mind at once and act on the branch most useful to her, so that plots laid against her tend to unravel before they mature. Rivals who have tried to have her killed describe surviving her as the more unsettling experience, since she often appears to have anticipated the attempt before it was made. Whether this is a true prescient gift, a Wych-cult discipline, or simply a network of informants unmatched even by Commorragh’s standards is a question the Dark City has never settled, and Malys does nothing to resolve it. Her manner in negotiation is recorded as courteous and unhurried, which those who deal with her learn to read as a warning rather than a reassurance.
Her standing rivalry with Vect defines her place among Commorragh’s great powers: she is one of the few former intimates he has not destroyed, and one of a smaller number still willing to work openly against him when it serves her. Their interactions since the separation have ranged from wary cooperation against common enemies to the kind of layered sabotage typical of kabal politics, and neither has moved to end the other outright, a restraint that Archons across the city read as evidence that each still fears what the other holds in reserve. Malys has also been linked to the haemonculus covens of the Prophets of Flesh in matters of trade and alliance, ties as provisional as any bond formed in the Dark City, and useful chiefly as a counterweight to Vect’s own web of obligations.
Whether Malys intends, or is even able, to unseat Vect remains open, and it is one of the longest-running questions in Commorraghite intrigue. Until it is answered, the Kabal of the Poisoned Tongue holds a secure and active place in the city’s hierarchy, its raids into the webway and the wider galaxy continuing to supply the slaves and souls that sustain her court. Lady Malys herself is treated by her contemporaries not as a challenger waiting for her moment, but as a fixture of Commorraghite power in her own right, one whose long game may outlast the throne she is presumed to want.
