Fabius Bile
Chief Apothecary of the III Legion, Pater Mutatis, Primogenitor
Also known as The Spider, Manflayer, Pater Mutatis, Primogenitor, Clonelord
Homeworld: Chemos
Fabius Bile was born on Terra, not on Chemos, before his induction into the III Legion, the Emperor’s Children, whose homeworld of Chemos he later came to be associated with through his service. He rose to Chief Apothecary, a position that earned him the epithet the Spider for the gene-crafting and surgical experiments he conducted upon his Legion’s warriors, refining their bodies even as the Legion itself slid toward excess during the Horus Heresy.
In the aftermath of the Drop Site Massacre at Isstvan V he trawled the world’s choral conclaves for the knowledge of the warsingers. During the Siege of Terra he worked from a bunker laboratory on captured civilians, and he departed the throneworld before Horus fell; Fulgrim is said to have placed a bounty on his head for that desertion. In the Legion Wars he recovered Horus’s corpse from Maeleum with the aid of Skalagrim Phar, raised clones at Canticle City on Harmony, and fled when Abaddon destroyed the city and killed the clone of Horus.
He settled the Crone World of Urum as the seat of his Consortium of renegade Apothecaries and continued his New Men project there. Accounts place him at the Shattering of Lugganath in 764.M34, seeking a means to arrest his body’s decay; later in Commorragh’s Tower of Flesh under the Coven of the Thirteen Scars; and at the Battle of Belial IV in 993.M37, where he defeated that coven. On Solemnace he bargained with Trazyn the Infinite over a clone of Fulgrim and a lost Emperor’s Children gene-seed tithe. In the War of the Spider he fought on Bairsten Prime and Dessah, and later raided the Zar-Quaesitor and the world Restitution for further genetic material.
Whether he worships Slaanesh in any conventional sense remains disputed. Accounts of a later pact with Fulgrim and that power sit beside his long-stated contempt for faith of any kind, and later tradition holds that he continued as a gestalt of autonomous clones rather than a single body.
