Sholto Unwerth

Sholto Unwerth is a void-trading shipmaster whose ship, the Arethusa, carried Inquisitor Gideon Ravenor’s retinue across Eustis Majoris and Bonner’s Reach. A free trader rather than a formal Navy officer, he retained nominal command of his own vessel even as its holds and passages were given over to the Inquisition’s purposes, moving agents and cargo between ports whenever the investigation into Eustis Majoris demanded sudden transit.

Unwerth dealt chiefly with Harlon Nayl, who arranged the Arethusa’s charters and briefed its master only as far as the cell’s work required; Ravenor himself remained a remote, seldom-seen presence aboard ship. Accounts of the arrangement describe Unwerth as anxious about the true nature of his cargo and the company he kept, yet consistently willing to put the Arethusa and its crew at the retinue’s disposal rather than refuse the contract. That mixture of nervousness and reliability marked his dealings with Ravenor’s circle throughout their time on and around Eustis Majoris.

Unwerth and the Arethusa remained bound to Ravenor’s service through the Eustis Majoris affair and the journeys that followed it, continuing as the retinue’s principal means of void transport. Little is recorded of his life or trade before this association, and accounts do not describe any activity for him apart from it; he stands in the chronicles as the merchant captain whose ship carried an Inquisitorial war that was mostly kept hidden from him.
