Harlon Nayl

Bounty hunter, Inquisitorial operative

Also known as Nayl

Harlon Nayl is a bounty hunter and gunman who became a long‑serving operative of Inquisitors Gregor Eisenhorn and Gideon Ravenor. His homeworld is not recorded, and accounts of his life before entering Inquisitorial service concentrate on his trade as a tracker and killer for hire rather than on any settled origin. What is consistently attested is his transition from independent contractor to fixture of two successive Inquisitorial retinues, a continuity that marks him as a specialist trusted across a change of command rather than a hired gun who moved on once a bounty closed.

Nayl entered Eisenhorn’s service on Hubris, where a bounty contract drew him into the Inquisitor’s orbit and, in due course, into his permanent retinue. He subsequently worked the Helican Sub‑sector trails alongside Eisenhorn, including operations on Gudrun and Scintilla, applying the same tracking and gunplay skills he had honed as a bounty hunter to Inquisitorial ends. This period established the pattern that defined his career: overt, physical work — surveillance, pursuit, and direct confrontation — carried out in support of an investigator who relied on subtler agents for interrogation and infiltration.

His service continued into the household of Gideon Ravenor following the grievous injury Ravenor sustained on Thracian Primaris, an event that left the younger Inquisitor confined to a sealed chair and reliant on psychic rather than physical presence in the field. Nayl’s decision to remain with Ravenor rather than return to independent bounty work is recorded as a deliberate choice, underlining a loyalty to the warrant and its bearer that outlasted the circumstances of his original recruitment.

On Eustis Majoris, Nayl operated within Ravenor’s cell alongside Patience Kys and Kara Swole, two contemporaries drawn from the same Eisenhorn‑era lineage of agents. Where Kys favoured blade‑work and covert lethality and Swole close‑quarters combat, Nayl was typically assigned to overt firefights and direct confrontation, reflecting a retinue that divided its labour among specialists rather than relying on a single generalist operative. This division of roles is characteristic of Ravenor’s household as a whole, and situates Nayl as its principal blunt instrument.

Harlon Nayl’s status as of the most recent records is active, with no account of his service to the Ravenor warrant having ended. He remains a useful reference point for the Helican theatre of Inquisitorial activity: a bounty hunter who outgrew his contract and became, by persistence rather than appointment, an enduring fixture of two Inquisitors’ careers.
