Sister Miriya is a Celestian Superior of the Order of Our Martyred Lady, the headstrong lead of James Swallow's Sisters novels, who treats orders as a starting position and then does what the moment actually requires. Her superiors find this exhausting. The missions she is given tend to need it.
Faith and Fire and Hammer and Anvil put her against witches, duplicity in the Ecclesiarchy, and the kind of heresy that wears a rosarius. She keeps a Celestian squad that will follow her off the page of the rulebook. That is not rebellion. It is a working definition of zeal.
Ophelia VII produces obedient martyrs in industrial lots. Miriya is the one who lives long enough to argue with the next Canoness and still be sent anyway. The Order has not yet decided if that is a virtue. It keeps using it.
