Canoness
Also known as Veridyan
Homeworld: Ophelia VII
Canoness Veridyan is a Sisters of Battle commander of the Order of Our Martyred Lady, active in the era after the Great Rift. She holds the rank of Canoness within one of the Adepta Sororitas’ largest and most widely deployed Orders Militant, and her likeness illustrates the cover of a recent Codex: Adepta Sororitas, making her one of the more visible individual Battle Sisters in current studio-sanctioned imagery even though her own campaign record remains comparatively obscure.
Veridyan was raised and trained on Ophelia VII, the Order’s home world and a schola dedicated to producing Canonesses for service across the Imperium; the world’s tradition holds that such officers are, in time, expended in the Emperor’s wars. Veridyan has not yet met that end. In the years following the opening of the Great Rift, she led a squad to the war-torn world of Siscia to locate a missing acolyte of the Inquisition. She recovered him alive amid the fighting and delivered him personally to Inquisitor Ander, a rare recorded instance of direct cooperation between her command and the Ordo Hereticus, binding her to a named interaction with the Inquisition during the Era Indomitus.
Accounts of Veridyan’s generalship describe a commander who dispenses with rousing oratory in favour of calculated, economical violence against her Order’s enemies. She is recorded as regarding martyrdom, and even her own damnation, with the same detachment she brings to any other operational risk, treating both as ordinary costs of command rather than occasions for ceremony. On more than one battlefield she has been described by those who fought beside her as a steadying presence, though she herself is said to approach each such engagement as routine duty rather than a defining feat.
Veridyan’s present service takes her to worlds of little strategic renown, places too minor to have generated their own iconography, in contrast to the prominence of her cover portrait. She remains a serving Canoness rather than a martyr or a Living Saint, and her career illustrates the wider Ophelia VII pattern from which many of the Order of Our Martyred Lady’s field commanders are drawn: extensively trained, rarely chronicled in detail, and judged by results rather than reputation.
