Shield of Baal
Shield of Baal is the name given to the 999.M41 campaign fought to defend the Blood Angels’ home system from a splinter of Hive Fleet Leviathan. The system, anchored on the twin worlds of Baal Prime and Baal Secundus with the fortress-world Cryptus screening its approaches, is the ancestral seat of the Blood Angels Chapter and the wellspring of its gene-line. The invasion is reckoned among the opening shocks of the Era Indomitus, a period in which the tyranid hive fleets pressed in on multiple fronts as the wider galaxy slid toward the opening of the Great Rift. The campaign unfolded in successive movements. Leviathan’s tendril first fell upon the system’s outer defences at Cryptus, drawing in the Blood Angels and their successor Chapters alongside Deathwatch kill-teams; as the tyranid pressure mounted, an opportunistic ork incursion struck the weakened system, forcing the defenders to fight on two fronts before the hive fleet’s main bio-ships closed on Baal itself. Chapter Master Dante and the Sanguinary Priesthood coordinated the defence of the home worlds, while losses among the Blood Angels’ bloodline raised fears for the future of the Chapter’s gene-seed. At the height of the siege the High Lords of Terra weighed Exterminatus against Baal, a measure ultimately withheld as the defence held. Baal was preserved but left scarred, its moons cratered and Baal Secundus rendered all but uninhabitable, with the campaign’s cost recorded among the Blood Angels’ heaviest since the Horus Heresy. The system’s relief coincided with the arrival of Roboute Guilliman’s Indomitus Crusade, linking the Shield of Baal to the wider reordering of the Imperium that followed the Fall of Cadia and the opening of the Great Rift. The episode is remembered on Orrery alongside contemporaries such as the Deathwatch and the Space Wolves detachments that came to Baal’s aid, and stands as a fixed point where the Baal system’s place on the map meets the timeline of the Era Indomitus.
