The Sanguinor

Herald of Sanguinius

Also known as Sanguinor, The Golden Angel

Homeworld: Baal

The Sanguinor is a golden-armoured figure of the Blood Angels, recorded as appearing on Baal and elsewhere when the Chapter faces defeat. It is styled the Herald of Sanguinius, and it is also known as the Golden Angel. Accounts describe a winged warrior in gilded war-plate who arrives at the point where a final stand appears unavoidable, fights at the head of the Chapter’s battle-brothers, and is gone before the engagement is concluded. Its place in the Blood Angels’ story is that of a recurring sign of the Primarch’s legacy rather than an officer of the Chapter’s formal order of battle.

The Chapter’s records describe its nature inconsistently. Accounts variously identify it as a hero of the Chapter, a relic, a fragment of Sanguinius, or a memory of the Primarch that has taken physical form in armour. No record reconciles these descriptions, and the Chapter has not adopted any one of them as doctrine. The association with Sanguinius rests on resemblance and on the timing of its appearances, not on any recorded lineage: the Primarch fell during the Siege of Terra in the Horus Heresy, and later tradition holds that the Sanguinor is the form in which his example returns to his sons. That reading is a tradition of the Chapter, not an established fact.

The map and timeline anchor for the Sanguinor is Baal, the Blood Angels’ home system, where it is recorded among the defenders in the Chapter’s gravest wars of the forty-first millennium, including the defence of the system against Hive Fleet Leviathan. It has also appeared in campaigns fought by the Blood Angels’ successor Chapters, where the Chapter’s survivors describe it in terms consistent with those given on Baal. Its principal living contemporary is Dante, the Chapter Master of the Blood Angels, who does not command it. He treats its arrival as a factor to be accounted for in planning, and not as a resource that can be requisitioned a second time or held in garrison. Its relationship to the Death Company and to the Chapter’s inherited flaws is not settled in the accounts, and none is asserted here.

The Sanguinor does not remain for the victory celebrations that follow, and the Chapter has ceased to request that it do so. Its status in the current era is active, in the sense that its appearances are still reported, though its whereabouts between them are unknown and no account describes where it goes. Its standing within the Blood Angels rests less on a settled identity than on its function: it supplies hope in a form the Chapter can recognise, and that hope at times depends on such a figure.
